A 35-Year Loan. For A Knife.

Hestia bought Bell a 200,000,000 valis knife on a 35-year loan. Can she actually pay it off?

Open on YouTube

TL;DR

The Hestia Knife costs 200,000,000 valis, paid in 420 monthly payments over 35 years. That is about 476,000 valis a month, or 16,000 a day. A Level 1 adventurer makes about 5,000 a day. Even if Hestia earned that from behind a shop counter, with no days off, she would need 109 years. Bell could pay a monthly rate in 13 days. She won't let him.

The contract

It sounds like a bit. It is the real contract. The Hestia Knife’s official item sheet in the light novel: a 35-year loan, 420 payments, and labor at the Babel branch.[1] The price on the invoice: 200,000,000 valis.[2]

So I built a calculator to check if she can actually pay it.[3]

Quick warning for anime-only viewers: Bell finds out about this in Season 2. The hard way.

How big is 200 million?

200,000,000 valis is one of those numbers your brain files under “big” and stops processing. So let’s climb.

What things cost in Orario

A Jyaga Maru Kun, the potato snack Hestia sells: 30 to 40 valis. Bell’s first dagger: 3,600. The armguard from Eina, which he treats like a holy relic: 7,700.[4] A Minotaur’s magic stone: 50,000.[5] The rescue quest Hestia posts when Bell goes missing in the Dungeon: 400,000.[6] A good house in Orario: 800,000. The price Soma Familia puts on Lili’s freedom: 10,000,000.[7]

Let me put that differently. Hestia offered 400,000 to save Bell’s life. To pay off the knife, she would have to save his life 500 times. Which, to be fair, is roughly how often he needs saving.

My favorite unit is the inn. When Bell first came to Orario, he paid 2,000 valis for three nights.[8] At that rate the knife buys 300,000 nights. That is over 800 years (821.9).

In the anime the deal is that she pays it back, no matter how many centuries it takes. I thought “centuries” was an exaggeration. It was an estimate. And she closed that deal by bowing on Hephaestus’s floor for three days, according to the novel.[4] Which, I checked, is not a payment method.

Her track record isn’t great either. In a bonus short story, Hestia joins Bell in the Dungeon as his supporter for one day. She chases a Jack Bird, whose drop is worth at least 1,000,000 valis, comes back chased by goblins, and throws away the backpack with everything they earned that day.[9] Return on investment: minus one backpack.

One last thing from Season 1, and hold onto it: when Lili steals the knife and tries to sell it, the shop offers her 30 valis.[10] For a 200,000,000 valis knife.

Can Hestia pay?

200,000,000 over 420 payments is 476,190 valis. Every month. For 35 years. That is about 16,000 a day.[3]

How much is that in Orario? The story gives one benchmark: a party of five Level 1 adventurers makes around 25,000 a day.[4] So one adventurer, fighting monsters in a hole in the ground, takes home about 5,000. Hestia needs 16,000. From behind a shop counter. She has to out-earn three adventurers (3.2, to be exact).

The honest part: I could not find Hestia’s actual wage anywhere, or the Guild’s tax table, and I am not going to invent canon. So in the calculator those are sliders.

hestia_loan.py --sandbox

200,000,000 valis, 420 payments, contract: 35 years

109.6 years

Wage and tax are not canon, so they are sliders. 365 days a year, no rent, no food.

Be absurdly generous. Hephaestus pays her like a full Level 1 adventurer, 5,000 a day, for standing at a counter. No days off, no rent, no food: 109 years (109.6). She works two jobs, so double it: still 55 years (54.8). On a 35-year contract.

PRINCIPAL = 200_000_000        # Hestia Knife, valis
TERM_YEARS = 35 # item sheet in the light novel
PAYMENTS = 420 # monthly payments, item sheet

def work_days_per_year(days_off_per_month):
    return 365 - 12 * days_off_per_month

def payoff_years(daily_wage, monthly_tax=0, days_off_per_month=0):
    """Years until the knife is paid off. None means never."""
    yearly = daily_wage * work_days_per_year(days_off_per_month) - monthly_tax * 12
    if yearly <= 0:
        return None
    return PRINCIPAL / yearly

The whole formula. Wage and tax are not canon, so they are inputs.

Most developers have technical debt. Hestia has a debt that is technically a knife.

Plant and payoff

So if the loan is impossible, why is it in the story? Because it is not a loan. It is a setup.

The technique is called plant and payoff: you plant a detail early, the audience half forgets it, and later it goes off. The plant: every time Season 1 shows Hestia working, the debt is on screen without anyone saying the number. The payoff: in Season 2, Hestia finally tries to recruit, and one invoice empties the room.[2] And Bell realizes he has been stabbing goblins with 200,000,000 valis.

One sheet of paper turns a romantic gift into stakes, and it keeps the Familia small, which is exactly what a story about a tiny found family needs.

The collateral

If you stop paying for a house, the bank takes the house. So if Hestia stops paying, Hephaestus takes the knife. And then?

Remember the 30 valis? The Hestia Knife only works for members of the Hestia Familia. For anyone else, a 200,000,000 valis knife is worth 30 valis: one potato snack. Hephaestus didn’t just forge a weapon. She invented DRM. It is a license key bound to one organization, and the moment you repossess it, it bricks itself.

From the lender’s side, this is an unsecured loan to an immortal goddess with a potato stand. Error 404: collateral not found.

Who can pay?

Bell. After he reaches Level 2, one day with Lili and Welf on floor 12 makes 72,000 valis. Bell takes half: 36,000.[11] At that rate one monthly payment is 13 days of work (13.2). Hestia needs a century. Bell needs two weeks a month.

Except she won’t let him. The debt is hers.

And there is a second catch. The Guild taxes every Familia monthly, by rank. When Bell reached Level 2, the Hestia Familia went from rank I to rank H, so the taxes went up.[11] The better Bell gets, the more they pay. A cloud bill that auto-scales with success.

Was it worth it?

So the loan is impossible. But was it a bad purchase? Tiona’s Urga, the giant double blade: 120,000,000. Ottar’s greatsword: 410,000,000, about twice the knife.[12]

And every adventurer replaces their weapon as they level. Bell won’t. The knife levels with him. The real comparison is not knife against dagger. It is knife against every weapon he would otherwise buy for the rest of his career. As a purchase, it is a steal.

After the War Game, Hestia finally gets a pile of money, and she spends all of it renovating the new home. Including a custom cypress bathhouse.[2]

Verdict

Code review

as a contract
Rejected. An immortal debtor, collateral that bricks itself, and a payment plan that needs three adventurers’ income from a snack stand.
as a weapon
The best purchase in DanMachi. Half the price of Ottar’s sword, and it never needs replacing.
as planning
Hestia gets an I zero.

The contract says 35 years. Hephaestus said centuries. One of those numbers is a loan. The other one is a friendship.

One more thing. Remember how Bell split his first haul with Lili fifty-fifty?[10] It shocked her, because every adventurer before him had paid her almost nothing. So Lili’s arc is a money story too.
