Isekai Titles Stopped Fitting On Your Phone
Are isekai titles really getting longer, and when do they stop fitting on a screen?
TL;DR
I pulled every Japanese anime on AniList since 2000 and measured the official English titles of first seasons. An isekai title was about three words long in the early 2010s. In 2026 it is 7.7 words, and 6 in 10 new isekai titles get cut off on AniList's phone layout. The jump starts in 2018, two years after isekai light novels jumped. And the real driver is not isekai at all: light novels.
The numbers
I pulled every Japanese anime on AniList since 2000[1], 11,691 entries, and measured every title. After the rules below, 3,164 anime from 2010 to today are left. 241 of them are isekai.[2]

Definitions
first seasonNo PREQUEL relation to another anime on AniList, and no sequel marker in the title (“Season 2”, “2nd Season”, “Part 2”, “II”). Otherwise every sequel makes the numbers longer, and that is not the title getting longer, that is the show refusing to end.
TV and web onlyFormats TV and ONA. No movies, no OVAs, no specials, nothing marked adult.
isekaiAniList’s users tagged it Isekai with a rank of at least 60 out of 100. The rank is how strongly users voted that the tag applies. Yes, the tag is messy: Angel Beats! (rank 62) and Glitter Force (rank 60) pass. So I reran everything with cutoffs of 50, 60, 70, 80 and 90. The 2022 to 2025 average stays between 6.8 and 7.3 words every time (2010 to 2017: 3.3 to 4.0). The messy version stays.
titleThe official English title on AniList, because that is the one you see. 210 of the 241 isekai have one. Titles without one are counted separately.

I'mis one word). Characters are the full English title, spaces included.Japanese charactersEnglish titles are a translator’s choice, so I also counted the original Japanese title, without spaces. If both lines agree, the trend is real.
2026Incomplete. Pulled mid October 2026, including announced shows of the current season. It is drawn dotted in the charts.

Isekai titles sit at about three words until 2017, then jump. Hover or tap for the number of anime per year: early years have few isekai, so single shows move the average a lot.
From 2010 to 2013 an isekai title had about three words (3.3). Like a normal name: Log Horizon. Then nothing happens for years. 2017: 3.8 words. 2018: 5.5. 2019: almost 7 (6.8), and it never comes back down. 2025: 7.0. 2026 so far: 7.7, and the median isekai title of 2026 is nine words long.[2]
In characters it is even clearer. Early 2010s: about 20 characters. 2026: 46.1. More than double.

And the Japanese line agrees. The original titles went from about 12 characters (11.9 in 2010 to 2013) to about 21 (21.4 in 2026). So it is not translators padding them out. The source got longer.

Why 2018? The books jumped first
I also pulled every light novel on AniList: 10,128 of them.[1] Isekai light novels went from about 5 words in 2013 (4.8) to 8 words in 2016 (8.0). The anime jumped two years later.

The books lead, the anime follow about two years later. Few light novels per year before 2013 and after 2021 on AniList, so those years are noisy (hover for n).
The people who measured books before me found the same jump. Red Bard counted English light novel titles and named 2014 as the jump year, with data up to 2017.[3] @GenreCodeLovers charted every light novel from 1975 to 2018 in Japanese characters, and titles of 30 or more characters rise from about 2016.[4] I wanted anime, isekai against everything else, up to this month.
Two years is roughly how long it takes for a book to get picked up, produced and aired. So the anime is not where this starts. The anime is the bookshelf with two years of input lag.
Does the studio shorten the title when the book becomes an anime? I matched 296 light novels to their anime. In Japanese, 73% of the anime keep the book’s title exactly, character for character.[2]
The longest one
There is no official record, so here is mine, by my counting rule. An anime from 2025, based on a web novel from 2020.[5] Its full light novel title, in English:[6][7]
Backstabbed in a Backwater Dungeon: My Trusted Companions Tried to Kill Me, But Thanks to the Gift of an Unlimited Gacha I Got LVL 9999 Friends and Am Out For Revenge on My Former Party Members and the World
39 words. In Japanese it is 79 characters.[8] The official English title of the anime on AniList is My Gift Lvl 9999 Unlimited Gacha: Backstabbed in a Backwater Dungeon, I’m Out for Revenge!: 15 words. Somebody in localization deleted 24 words. The best compression in this whole project.
It is still not the longest English title in the dataset. Counting every format, movies and OVAs included, the winner is an OVA from 2021:
Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? III: Is It Wrong to Try to Find a Hot Spring in Orario? -Bath God Forever-
28 words. Out of 11,691 anime, the English title with the most words belongs to DanMachi, and it is about a hot spring.[2]
Is it isekai, or light novels?
Every other anime is growing too, just slower: 3.5 words in 2010 to 2013, 5.4 in 2026. So I split everything from 2018 to 2025 by where the story comes from. This is the real result.

Original anime: about 3 words. Manga: about 4. Light novels that are not isekai: 6.89. Isekai light novels: 7.53.
Look at the top two bars. Isekai and non-isekai light novels are almost the same. It is not isekai. It is light novels. Isekai is just the loudest patient.[2]
And it is spreading. The Japanese e-book store BookLive analysed about 2 million manga titles: the average went from 9.14 characters in 2011 to 18.45 in 2026, and the median from 8 to 16.[9][10] Manga is next.
Why light novels: the phone list
A lot of light novels don’t start as books. They start on websites where anyone can post a story. On one of them, Narou, there were over 1.15 million works and about 300 new ones per day in March 2025.[11]
And Narou writers explain it themselves: on a phone, the list shows you basically one thing, the title.[12] No cover, no trailer, no thumbnail. If your title is Log Horizon, nobody knows what your story is. If your title explains your whole story, you used the only space you were given.
So the title is not a name anymore. It is the thumbnail, the trailer and the search keywords, in one string. Narou reportedly stops a title at 100 characters,[13] so writers use all 100. Then the story gets popular, a publisher prints it, the title survives, and two years later it is an anime. That is the curve.
The phone, measured
I measured AniList’s own phone layout: a 390 px wide phone, AniList’s 16 px Overpass font, 16 px margins. One full line holds about 40 characters. The small result cards are 115 px wide with a 12 px font and stop after two lines.[2]

What gzip thinks of isekai
If all those titles chase the same keywords, they should all sound the same. That can be measured with compression. A program like gzip makes text smaller by finding phrases it has already seen and replacing the repeat with a tiny pointer back. The more repetitive a text is, the smaller it gets.
I took the same amount of title text from each group, 2018 to 2025, and compressed it.[2]
How small the titles get after gzip
Compressed size in % of the raw text, same amount of text per group. Lower means more repetitive.

| Every non-isekai anime | 57.16 |
| Manga, not isekai | 56.66 |
| Light novel, not isekai | 53.28 |
| Isekai | 50.95 |
Original anime titles shrink to 57%, manga titles the same. Non-isekai light novels: 53%. Isekai: 51%, the most compressible titles in anime.
I am not saying they are all the same title. I am saying gzip thinks they are. The most common words in isekai titles since 2018: "world" (32), "another" (24), "life" (13), "villainess" (10), "reincarnated" (9), "strongest" (7). From 2022 to 2025, one isekai title in five (20.9%) says “another world”.
Real or fake?
If the titles are that repetitive, you don’t need anything smart to write new ones. So I wrote something dumb: markov.py, a word-level Markov chain. It reads every real isekai title and remembers one thing: after these two words, which word came next? It doesn’t know what a villainess is.
In the video, round two was Enough with This Slow Life! I Was Cursed by the Gods (fake) against Chillin’ in Another World with Level 2 Super Cheat Powers (real). The program had kept the first half of a real title and swapped the second. Below, every pair is one fake from the program and the closest real title it found.
Which one is a real title?
The idea of the game is not new: in 2021 Gigguk played real-or-fake with a neural network trained on every BOOK☆WALKER light novel title.[14] The point here is how small the program can be. Two words of memory are enough to fool people, and that says something about how formulaic the titles are.
def train(titles, order=2):
chain = defaultdict(list)
for t in titles:
words = [START] * order + t.split() + [END]
for i in range(len(words) - order):
chain[tuple(words[i:i + order])].append(words[i + order])
return chain
def generate(chain, order=2, max_words=40):
state, out = (START,) * order, []
while len(out) < max_words:
word = random.choice(chain[state])
if word == END:
break
out.append(word)
state = state[1:] + (word,)
return " ".join(out)The whole generator is 64 lines. train() counts which word follows each pair of words, generate() walks those counts at random.
Does a long title hurt the show?
I took every isekai with enough ratings: 204 shows with a popularity of at least 5,000 on AniList. Title length against score: nothing. The correlation is -0.013, flat. Titles of 5 words or fewer average 66.8 out of 100 (112 shows), titles of 10 words or more average 65.6 (43 shows).[2]
A long title doesn’t make a bad show. It just tells you where the show was born.
When does it break everything else?
A straight line through the isekai character averages from 2010 to 2025 grows by 1.845 characters per year (r = 0.859). An exponential fit grows by 7.56% per year. Here is when each one crosses the next limit.[2]
| limit | characters | straight line | exponential |
|---|---|---|---|
| One phone line on AniList | 40 | 2024 | 2024 |
| A Google result title | 60 | 2035 | 2029 |
| A line of Python (PEP 8) | 79 | 2045 | 2033 |
| A YouTube video title | 100 | 2057 | 2036 |
| A tweet | 280 | 2154 | 2050 |
The phone line came true on schedule: the 2025 average is 41.5 characters. The rest has a bug, and it is an honest one. Narou reportedly caps titles at 100 characters, and 11 works in one genre sit at exactly 100.[13] The longest light novel series names on BOOK☆WALKER have been stuck at 96, 98, 97 and 93 characters from 2021 to 2024.[8] The trend has a hard limit, and it is a text box. PEP 8’s 79 characters[15] are probably safe for a while.
Verdict
So, are long titles bad? I don’t think so. A long title isn’t lazy. It is an interface, built for a list on a phone where nothing else gets seen. And in that list, it works. The title of this video was written the same way.
